January 4, 2021 — DHA is proud to announce that Capital One is supporting the Opportunity Rising Foundation as part of its Impact Initiative, a five-year commitment to support growth in underserved communities and advance socioeconomic mobility by closing gaps in equity and opportunity. The Opportunity Rising Foundation, an initiative of DHA, Housing Solutions for North Texas, in 2020 awarded scholarships to 10 students attending colleges and universities in Texas and other states.

“We’re grateful to receive support for our North Texas scholars from Capital One, a trusted financial services company that’s dedicated to building thriving communities,” said Troy Broussard, President and CEO of DHA. “Capital One understands the power of education in driving opportunity and socioeconomic mobility, and we’re honored to be among their philanthropic investments this year.”

Opportunity Rising Foundation scholarships have established lasting impact, with 52% of scholars earning their bachelor’s or master’s degrees, 77% currently employed and 76% no longer receiving government assistance. More than 71% of the Opportunity Rising scholars are first generation college students, including this year’s Leadership Award scholarship winner Kamari Wilkerson.

Thanks to the Opportunity Rising Foundation scholarship and support from his family and friends, Wilkerson is attending Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where he’s also playing football on scholarship. He’s studying business and would love to pursue an engineering degree in the future.

“I try to challenge myself and work hard because nobody ever knew I could make it this far,” Wilkerson said. “I know a lot of people are watching and helping me with school. I just want to say thank you to everyone who is helping me reach my goals.”

“Capital One is proud to partner with local organizations that directly serve our communities and create opportunities for our region’s future leaders,” said Sanjiv Yajnik, President, Capital One Financial Services and South Central Region Market President. “When we have a strong talent and workforce pipeline, businesses thrive and our community becomes more vibrant.”

Capital One’s donation will help more scholars pursue their dreams and make their families proud, said Chyrel Roseborough, DHA Education Coordinator, noting that more than half of DHA’s residents are under the age of 18.
